When popular influencers are asked about the secrets to their success, chances a lot of them will say that they found their niche and focused on creating content relevant to that niche. Great! So…what does that mean?

A niche is a specific topic or focus area. A fashion influencer’s niche may be “affordable, under-$100 fashion ideas” as an example, or “luxury skincare product reviews” for a beauty influencer. The idea is to get as specific as possible and find what sets that individual apart. While there are literally thousands of fashion influencers, not everyone focuses on affordable fashion, so being able to identify what makes your content unique is crucial to making your personal brand appealing to potential partners as well as followers.

Okay, so all the successful influencers have identified the niches that make them unique. Cool! But how exactly does one determine a niche? We have a few questions that can help you brainstorm and figure out what your niche is:

Determining Your Niche: 5 Questions To Ask

Ask yourself these 5 questions to help brainstorm your niche:

  1. What are your passions, hobbies, and interests? what are the things that bring you joy in life?

  2. What do you “geek out” about? This could be anything from the history of French fashion to that incredible eyeliner that actually stays put no matter what or a recipe that you absolutely swear by.

  3. Is there anything you consider yourself an “expert” on? Think beyond just school degrees; you could be an expert on Harry Potter or finding the best online sales.

  4. What sets you apart from other people in your space? Why turn to you and not someone else with a similar style or knowledge?

  5. Are there any gaps in your space or industry that you’ve noticed? How can you be the one to fill in that gap?

After answering these questions, you will hopefully have a better idea on what topics you should be focusing on with your content.

Next Steps: Run A Content Diagnostic

Now let’s talk next steps and making sure your niche translates through your content!

  1. What content can you create that ties into your newly-defined niche? Think about the platforms that will best get your photos, videos, writing, etc. across and how you can share information, inspiration, and/or entertainment in a new way.

  2. Do your channels currently reflect your niche? How do your blog posts, social media accounts, and other content reflect your niche? If someone were to look at your channels right now, would they be able to tell what your niche is?

  3. What can you update or change moving forward to make your niche more apparent? This can include updating your bio and social media profiles, changing your profile pictures to reflect your niche, and strategizing a new content creation plan to ensure that your niche is the main subject of posts moving forward. If you want, you can even archive old posts or content that doesn’t reflect your newly-defined focus.

Voila! Now you have a solid game plan moving forward and a unique niche to set you apart from the rest of the crowd. Taking the time to define your niche will not only help you stand out, but it will help you create meaningful content that has a purpose.

From now on, always ask yourself how the content you put out relates back to your niche and ties into your mission of educating, inspiring, or entertaining. The more purpose there is behind your posting, the stronger your work will become!
